What is on the AP Calculus AB exam?
The AP Calculus AB exam is 3 hours 15 minutes long and has two sections worth 50% each: Section I is 45 multiple-choice questions and Section II is 6 free-response questions. Each section is further split into a no-calculator part and a calculator part.
- Section I, Part A: 30 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes, no calculator (33.3% of the score).
- Section I, Part B: 15 multiple-choice questions, 45 minutes, graphing calculator required (16.7%).
- Section II, Part A: 2 free-response questions, 30 minutes, graphing calculator required (16.7%).
- Section II, Part B: 4 free-response questions, 60 minutes, no calculator (33.3%).
Multiple-choice questions have four answer choices (A through D). Each free-response question is worth 9 points and has 3 to 4 parts using fixed command verbs like "Justify," "Using correct units, interpret," and "Write, but do not evaluate." The multiple-choice and free-response sections each count for half of your composite score.

What's the difference between AP Calc AB and BC?
AP Calculus BC covers everything in AB and adds two more units: parametric, polar, and vector functions (Unit 9) and infinite sequences and series (Unit 10). Both exams share the same format — 45 multiple-choice plus 6 free-response questions in 3 hours 15 minutes — and even share 3 of the same free-response prompts, so the difference is the extra BC topics, not a different test structure.
Because BC has to fit two extra units into the same 45 multiple-choice questions, the AB topics carry less individual weight on the BC exam. For example, Limits & Continuity is 10–12% on AB but only 4–7% on BC, while Series alone accounts for 17–18% of the BC multiple-choice section.
BC-only units (not on the AB exam):
- Unit 9 — Parametric, Polar & Vector functions: 11–12% of BC multiple choice. Includes parametric tangent slopes, arc length, and polar area.
- Unit 10 — Infinite Sequences & Series: 17–18% of BC multiple choice — the single heaviest BC topic. Includes convergence tests, Taylor and Maclaurin series, and the Lagrange error bound.
BC also reports an "AB subscore" — a 1-to-5 score on just the AB-overlapping material — so a BC student effectively gets credit for both. Is AP Calculus hard? How do you get a 5?
AP Calculus is challenging because the hardest questions reward conceptual reasoning, not just computation — the exam often labels a graph "the graph of f-prime" and then asks about f, or gives a table of rates and asks you to interpret the accumulation in context with correct units. Getting a 5 comes from mastering those reasoning patterns and the high-weight units, then practicing under real exam timing until they're automatic.
A focused path to a 5:
- Prioritize the heavy units. On AB, Units 5, 6, and 8 together can make up roughly half the multiple-choice section. On BC, Series (Unit 10) alone is 17–18%.
- Drill the reasoning archetypes. Practice the graph-of-f-prime questions, accumulation with an initial condition (the classic "forgot the +C / initial value" trap), particle motion with total distance as the integral of the speed, and — for BC — series convergence tests.
- Master both calculator and no-calculator work. Half of the exam is done without a calculator, where answers come out as clean integers, simple fractions, or exact forms with e, pi, or square roots.
- Practice the free-response command verbs. Points are awarded for units, notation, and justification separately from the final number, so a "write, but do not evaluate" prompt only needs the correct setup.
- Take full timed mock exams. Pacing — about 2 minutes per multiple-choice question and 15 minutes per free-response question — is its own skill.
